Writing Prompt 11

This painting is talking about the birth of the goddess Venus, but we might want to look at it today as the birth of a woman; how do we see a woman today and when do we decide she has become a woman? Is it only when we see the sight of a bosom growing or the other delicacies needed for a girl to be called a woman?

Look at the people next to Venus and you will see that some are trying to cover her to keep people from looking at her naked, and some are attempting to blow the wind to remove the little hair that is still covering the rest of her body; this might be one way to look at it. If so, does that remind you of some people in our society who try to protect women and some others who only want to see them naked?

The current prototype of a woman in a good shape with long blond hair and what not is well-portrayed in this painting. Maybe, Botticelli did it because he was portraying Venus, after all, the goddess of beauty and love. However, this might just be a prototype of a perfect woman we still hold on to even today. This mixture of a beautiful innocent face and a sexy body, regardless of the mind, has always been the dream of many men to have for themselves and lock up in a cell full of their lust and so-called love. Some other men do not keep this divine mixture for themselves, as they share it with many others. I know how indigestible these words might be, but ain’t that the goddamn truth? What are we doing and where do we stand from this exploitation of women that is happening every single day?

There might be a story behind this painting. A beautiful innocent girl just came to town, and everyone is trying to affect her in his/her special way. What could be the fate of that girl? How could she find out who she is on the inside and zone out from all this noise coming from all around her trying to tell her who she is supposed to be? Her resistance and giving in are stories, her faith and skepticism are a story, her triumphs and disappointments are a story, and so all you need to do is figure out what your perspective is and start to write.

Write a short story, or a poem about what you can discern from this painting and share a link to your story with us here on Danny B. You can be generous and share a link to this writing prompt on your website or your social media.
